At Spring Automation, National Intern Day isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a chance to celebrate the bright minds shaping the future of engineering and automation. This summer, we’re proud to spotlight Elizabeth and Sam, two interns who are doing more than just assisting with projects—they’re helping drive innovation from the inside out.
Evolving Our Internship Program
Historically, our interns would jump right into project work, often before receiving complete training. While this gave them hands-on experience quickly, it also came with challenges. That’s why this year, we’ve taken a new approach.
Our updated internship philosophy gives interns the same foundational training our full-time engineers receive, ensuring they have the tools and context needed to succeed. From there, each intern is assigned a development project—something meaningful that addresses a real need at Spring, whether it's improving existing tools, researching new hardware, or building out documentation for systems we’ll be working with on-site.
This new structure ensures that interns leave with a tangible, rewarding experience—something they can be proud of and something that genuinely moves Spring forward.
Meet Elizabeth
Elizabeth Boyd, a MTSU Mechatronics grad, joined Spring to bring her passion for creation and hands-on problem solving to life. She says, “I've always loved the idea of creation and watching a product start as a concept and grow into something that benefits others."
Through her internship, Elizabeth has earned certifications in VFDs and Circuits & Wiring, while soaking up lessons in teamwork, applied engineering, and the art of asking good questions. “Everyone understands you're there to learn and that you're expected to ask questions.”
Elizabeth describes Spring’s environment as team-oriented, inclusive, and positive, with no cubicles or closed doors—just open collaboration. “It gives a family dynamic, and it makes me feel the most confident I've ever felt in a workplace.” Her time here has helped her realize she wants to pursue a career in Controls Engineering, and she's aiming for a future as a Commissioning Engineer at Spring.
Meet Sam
Sam Apigian, also a Mechatronics Engineering graduate from MTSU, knew he was destined for this field back in 5th grade, when he joined his first robotics team. Since then, he’s built a passion for Controls Engineering, which he explored during a previous internship and now pursues more deeply at Spring.
Sam’s first day on the job included Spring’s annual canoe trip, and it set the tone for what he calls a surprisingly close-knit and welcoming culture. He says, “The people at Spring create so many opportunities to interact through potlucks, team-building exercises, and other activities that allow us to get to know one another better.”
He’s also gained hands-on experience in everything from VFD control to network programming through our structured training modules. His advice to future interns? “Always be looking and willing to take on opportunities within the company. Also, never be afraid to ask for help when you need it; no one expects you to know everything.”
Looking ahead, Sam hopes to continue exploring the country as a Commissioning Engineer and grow into a Controls Engineer I role. He considers his time with us a very rewarding experience that has been a huge help to his personal growth.
Building the Future, One Internship at a Time
At Spring Automation, we don’t see interns as temporary help—we see them as future teammates, thinkers, and innovators. By equipping them with training, meaningful projects, and mentorship, we’re investing in both their growth and ours.
To Elizabeth and Sam—thank you for the energy, curiosity, and commitment you’ve brought to our team. Happy National Intern Day!
